Sarah McLachlan
The best in Canadian songwriting was honored on Monday (Nov. 8) at the 10th Annual Society of Composers, Authors, and Music Publishers of Canada Awards, held at Toronto's Sheraton Centre Ballroom.

Country music star Shania Twain topped the list, sharing three awards with her collaborator/husband, producer John "Mutt" Lange, for "You're Still The One," "From This Moment On," and "Don't Be Stupid" from her album Come On Over. Vancouver singer Sarah McLachlan's songs "Sweet Surrender" and "Adia" (co-written with Pierre Marchand) were selected in the pop category, alongside Loreena McKennitt's "The Mummer's Dance," and the Bryan Adams/Jim Vallance-penned "I'm Ready." Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn," written by Scott Cutler, Anne Preven, and Phil Thornalley, was recognized as the most played International Song in Canada. The Special Achievement Award was handed to jazz pianist Oliver Jones and the Wm. Harold Moon Award for international recognition was awarded to composer Dr. Oskar Morawetz.

Many of Canada's most legendary artists were in attendance, including veteran singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot. Lightfoot, whose compositions have been covered by such acts as Bob Dylan, Glen Campbell, and Elvis Presley, was obviously surprised to receive an award for his '70s folk song "If You Could Read My Mind," as performed by Stars on 54. Lightfoot also presented SOCAN's National Achievement Award to Stompin' Tom Connors. The country singer from Prince Edward Island has become a national icon, having sold over three million albums without a single appearance outside of Canada. The fierce patriot accepted his award with his usual candor: "I don't know what the hell I am doing here," he said. "I'm just doing what's in me heart to do for the country that means so much to me."

SOCAN presented over 20 awards to songwriters and publishers whose music was most performed on commercial radio, TV and film in 1998.
