Seattle Theatre Group presents the legendary singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot.
The body of work of Canadian-born Gordon Lightfoot has a special meaning for millions of fans around the world. Near universal recognition is sparked by any one of his hit songs; "If You Could Read My Mind," "Early Morning Rain," "Cotton Jenny," "Protocol," "Don Quixote," "Sundown," "Shadows," "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," "Beautiful," "Ribbon of Darkness,"... and the list goes on.
The fist of accolades goes on as well. Over the course of his extraordinary career, Lightfoot has filled his mantle with platinum and gold albums, four Grammy nominations, sixteen Juno awards, and--his country's musical ambassador--he was awarded the prestigious Order of Canada.
A-list artists who have recorded his material include Peter, Paul and Mary, Elvis Presley, Glenn Campbell, Anne Murray, Barbra Streisand, Richie Havens, Marty Robbins, and Harry Belefonte. In recent years Lightfoot has branched out to appear in acting roles, including A 1980 supporting role with Bruce Dern in the feature film "Harry Tracy." In 1987 he made his network television debut in an episode of "Hotel'" where he played a musician struggling to overcome alcoholism. The part was significant for the artist, who had ven up drinking himself five years earlier.
Gordon Lightfoot's musical saga began in the small town of Orilla, Ontario where he first began singing in the church choir. By the time he had graduated from high school, the fledgling musician had taught himself to play guitar written his first song and set his sights on asinging career. He established himself as a first class performer on the Toronto club scene and as A featured performer on Canadian TV.
In 1969, after recording five groundbreaking albums with United Artists, Lightfoot signed to Warner Bros./Reprise Records, where he recorded such enduring works as: "If You Could Read My Mind" (1970), "Summer Side of Life" (1971), "Don Quixote" (1972), "Sundown" (1973) "Summertime Dream" (1976), "Endless Wire" (1978), "Shadows" (1982), "Salute" (1983), "East of Midnight" (1986), and "Waiting for You" (1993). A new as yet untitled studio album (Reprise/Warner Bros.) is in the works to be released in 1997.
Gordon Lightfoot's music is both new and old, fresh and familiar. His concerts consistently draw capacity crowds and rave renews touching people in special and intensely personal ways.
