It is a tough choice to pick only one from his 20 original studio albums. Another vote for "Don Quixote."

Picking a favorite GL album is at best, very difficult. I have been listening to Gord since '70 and immediately fell in love with his music the first time I heard 'If You Could Read My Mind." I immediately bought the album and wore it out. Furtunately I found out very shortly after that, that GL was not new. I found the previous 5 albums and commenced to wear them out. Them Summer Side of Life came out and well anyway I wound up with about 15 or so GL albums. The albums were replaced with 8 tracks and castettes, although I still have the vinyls. Well I now have all of them on CD's including his Gord's Gold CD's, Greatest Hits and Sonbook. I am still looking for Harmony and will have that soon.
Three really stand out for me. "If You Could Read My Mind, Old Dan's Records and Don Quixote." That is about as close as I can cimmit to a favorite. |

One of the things I love about my Gordon Lightfoot CD's is that I never want to skip over any of the songs. They are all great. I just love that man!!

None of them are flawless, but my overall favorite album, Salute, is close. The one problem is Knotty Pine. I fairly detest that song.

It's all in the eye/ear? of the beholder/listener but for many of us quite a few of Gord's albums/CDs are flawless. From cover to cover, right on through all the songs and down to the liner notes. Really ! and I'm very hard to please. Bill http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif |
Another vote for DQ. Second favorite is Back Here On Earth.

I think "flawless" is a tough one! Gord has spanned such a long time, that I feel you have to divide his work into two halves. You have to have a "older" era versus the "modern" Lightfoot. My opinion is flawless in the older: Don Quixote and the modern: Waiting for you. I find it most interesting that both these works have strong songs that Gord did not write. His performances on these cuts, are very srong though, almost better than some of his own works. It is an amazing career, and I think with the Harmony release and the history behind it.... time for lifetime acheivement Grammy award? Not many have been around longer. I can count them. They gave Johnny Cash an award and he did not write most of his stuff like Gord has. Thats my thought on flawless

We should each make up our own "flawless" album of 10 songs from all his many albums. I've tried making up playlists before with the 10 songs that for me, are the very best of GL, but it sure ain't easy.
I'm curious to read how many (including me) have listed Don Quixote as their choice for flawless. The reason I chose it is because I believe it was made at a time when he was on the cusp of hitting it really big (Sundown, two years later) and just at the end of his "early" period. He still had the edge of youth but the wisdom of being in his mid-30s was showing nicely. His voice is so warm and rich on every Don Quixote track and the clean guitar work from everyone is truly amazing. I also love the "real" strings used and find the arrangements go so well with the songs without overpowering. This is the album I'd take to a desert island (Sundown would be my second if I could take two). John |

Come to think of it, I can't find anything wrong with IYCRMM. Not as good as WFY but no bad songs on it or anything.
