I'd ask him if I could ask him 20 MORE
questions. And he'd laugh, I'm sure! I once
asked him all kinds of questions, but had
planned in advance and made sure they'd be
the kind of questions he wouldn't normally
hear. After about a dozen questions, I took
a breath and he said, "Got any MORE questions?!" and chuckled and I said, "Yes!"
and blasted away again. He was very patient and funny. It was like a fun little battle of wits which he, of course won. But it was
really fun and interesting.

Midnightmisty,
What were some of those 20 questions?

Frank.

I'm not sure I would ask a question. He gets so many all the time, but maybe I say that because right now I don't have a really good one in mind. I'm a perfectionist and if I had the chance, it would have to be a really good question. One that he doesn't normally get asked, not like "What's your favorite GL song?"

Char, I found your question very interesting and definitely worthy of asking him. But even if he decided to beat around the bush about it like he did to many questions on MMM, I think I know the answer. He does know. Just listen to the music, he is obviously not a dumby. The ability to write such poetry I think demands an intelligent mind and the fact that he purposely dodges questions shows his smarts. But he is so incredibly humble that maybe he is a little embarrassed about thinking that he has had such an impact on so many people. For all you humble people out there, think about how you feel when someone says to you, "You're really good at that" or "You're such a good whatever" or "You're so smart". Some people love to hear things like that, but really humble people get a little, or a lot, embarrassed. I think it's that way with Gord. He's not about to walk around saying to himself and everyone else, "Yea I'm a great songwriter and these people's lives are so much better because of me." He's too genuine for that, but really deep down, I think he knows it.

Frank,

One that I can remember was if he ever ran across a grizzly bear on his canoe trips.
And his answer was funny!!!! He leaned over
into my face a little and said in that deep,
speaking voice he does in "In My Fashion",
"Nope..... but then again a grizzly bear ain't ever run into ME!" Hence my nic-name for him, "The Rough Tough Creme Puff".
I'm getting a disconnects message! bye!

Frank, I'll try to give one each day that I
think he wouldn't mind being shared in public. Like the grizzly bear story.

And Chris is correct about Gord being humble,
very much so. It's so endearing.

Oh, once I asked him if he had a license to use that smile in the United States as he was breaking an awful lot of hearts with that careless thing! He chucked. So did my husband! I didn't think it was a laughing matter.

Here's a quickie.

I asked him about the ancestral origins of his surname.....does anyone else know that
story? Because it has a story to it.

MNM,

LOL, How could you leave us hanging like that?!? You must tell the story behind his surname!

Janice

Chris M 08-17-2000 03:40 AM

Janice,

I was hoping someone else knows, besides me.
I wrote to Florian with the true answer and
also explained the history behind it as it was explained to me. I asked him to consider it for the quiz. But I don't think he got it. So I was going to save it, just in case Silver Heels starts a quiz at her site! First come, first serve!

Janice, what would your guess be? Mine was soooo far off til I got the scoop from the Big Man, himself.

Come on now, Janice.... guess!

The surname. I don't know what story is behind it, but I listened to a radio interview with Gord and the interviewers asked him if he had any indian in him (which a lot of people might assume with a name like Lightfoot). He replied that it was Scottish. Correct me if you think this is wrong.

I have to ponder on this one for a few moments. I'll be back shortly.

Well, after thinking about this for most of the night, I'm no further along than I was earlier. I really have no idea so I'm gonna go with humor and say:

His ancestors were famous dancers and were light on their feet??

Janice,

Nice try, but young stranger is correct. It's Scottish. Gord told me that his "people were foot messangers in Scotland l-o-n-g ago, even before horses were put to use" so the name must be ancient!

Ok. Here's another one.

I asked him if he remembered where he was and
what he was doing when he had heard the news
about the JFK assination. He said he was in Toronto putting gas in his car and asked me why I asked. And I told him about how all
the other fans I've ever spoken with all have their story to tell about where they
were and what they were doing the very first time they heard him and what the song was.
Well, he stopped tuning his guitar, cocked his head and stared me right in the eyes for the longest time and then asked if I was serious. I said "yes" and he was in complete and total shock!! Complete! He was stunned...
After a minute, or so, he asked me what MY story was about that. He could hardly believe the whole thing, but by the end, I had him convinced! Whew.........

Frank.

I've been thinking about this and I believe it would be:

Gord, You're music has provided a great deal of solace to people and helped them through good and bad times. Your music and humanity is cherished and revered around the world. As a songwriter and poet, I'm sure most times you turn to your own pen to celebrate happiness and sadness but is there an artist out there that you feel this way about; that you turn to for comfort; that you cherish the way we cherish you?
