Ode to Big Blue

(doesn't make me cry, but I could listen to the melancholy guitar over and over again)

Ordinary Man

And Rick's Bass glides

So sparing and so haunting as Blue moves along.

So much w/ so little. Shivers.

I bet a lot of war vetran's would have or did cry if the heard "Protocol". That song is so deep and serious. :(

The Rez 07-29-2005 02:32 AM

Yes.

And The Patriot's Dream.

There is a line in GL's tribute to Stephen Foster, 'Your Love's Return'that sometimes literally chokes me w/ tears...'I must be forgiven now'. That line and the soft gentle way GL sings it cuts though me and my soul like a knife. I have all kinds of problems w/ forgiveness anyway.

Borderstone 07-29-2005 05:40 PM

"If Children Had Wings" kind of gets me too because I think of how innocent I was when that song was out in '78 and how little i knew about the real world.
Then I think about how childhood has changed in the past 15 years or so and I feel sad for those kids who are growing up too fast. ..or not at all. :( Okay,I have to stop typing .

Shazia 07-29-2005 07:58 PM

How could I have forgotten the Patriot's Dream? It is the song that sounds lively when it begins, but becomes really, really sad...the lyrics really get to me!

Ophelia 07-29-2005 08:20 PM

"Home From The Forest" -- those lyrics choke me up every time!

Things are OK Linda. :) Hmm....polyester? I still wear it!!! :D

Q. does anyone after all these years cry when they hear,"If You Could Read My Mind"? Or are you too used to it? I'm use to it,so I guess I dont. :)

<Linda> 08-07-2005 07:17 PM

I have quite a few polyester items in my closet too...I'm just holding out for some day putting my iron away for good!! lol

I can fill up on a lot of Gordons songs...that one especially....I love that guy!! If I went to one of his concerts, it wouldn't be to hard to spot me...I'd be the sobber!! lol

In response to the original question. "Brave Mountaineers" from DQ brings tears to my eyes. It is certainly not a melancholy song by any stretch, but GL captures the essence of a happy, rural childhood like I experienced and the fond memories come flooding back. Happy tears they are.

Debra, I hear you on that one:

There were things that were said, there were things that were done, and a wife cannot stand too much pain...

That hurts.

Borderstone 09-02-2005 06:19 PM

You know....whenever there is really bad trouble in the world someplace and children are unfortunatly involved,I can't help but think of this song. I also can't help but think of how I wish I could do something meaningful to help them. :(

Borderstone 09-18-2005 07:43 PM

I had a dream the other night that I was in a store and this lady was holding a baby and singing,"The Tennesee Waltz" to her/him.

Thatsong always gets me a bit and I know if Gordon did the song,I wouldn't be able to hold back the tears!

Rona 09-18-2005 09:06 PM

Pardon my ignorance, but what are the words to "The Tennessee Waltz"?

musky_man 09-18-2005 09:36 PM

Oddly, Drink Yer Glasses Empty, puts a lump in my throat.

I guess because my dad and father-in-law were both in WWII in the RCAF. Both lucky to get back in one piece. I see pics of my dad as a young boy, all of 19 years old, climbing into his big 4-engine Halifax Bomber. I see my father-in-law climbing into his Spitfire ... and I wonder ...would I have had the courage to do what they did voluntarily?

Today they are both still here -- one 81 and the other 87 -- both mere shadows of the men that I knew as vigorous and strong ... that is their bodies, but there souls and spirits are still 20 years old despite the lines that time has etched on their faces.

Every day that goes by I say thanks to them and the 1.1 million Canadians who served in WWII. We were a country of only 11 million people at the time -- over 10% of the population served. We lost more people per capita to WWII than any other country excepy Russia.

~~~~~~~~~
Good night all.
Rona, first, it's not ignorant to ask for something when you aren't sure...anyway, these are some of the words I know for sure, at least the first verse and chorus:
I was dancin'
with my darlin'
to the Tennessee waltz,
when an old friend
I happened to meet.
I introduced him
to my loved one;
and while they were dancin',
my friend stole my sweetheart from me.
[Chorus]
I remember the night
and the Tennessee waltz.
Now I know just how much I have lost.
Yes, I lost my
little darlin'
the night they were playin'
the beautiful Tennessee Waltz.
I know there are a couple more verses, but I'm not sure exactly how they go...this is the version played by a guy, and you can change the "him" to "her" for whomever is singing it...such as when Patti Paige sang it...back in the day :D
Borderstone 09-19-2005 08:14 PM
Debra,I saw Patti Page on PBS earlier this year on one of those 1950's music specials. She sang that song as if it were still the early 1950's!
It was extremely moving,not just for the lyrics but in seeing the folks in the audience that are my Mother's age & up. They looked so happy to see her up there,like they were in a time machine or something. :) :( (at the same time.)
Even more touching that night was another singer from that time Gogi Grant (not her real name). She had a huge hit in 1956 with,"The Wayward Wind".
Pat Boone introduced her and out strolled this now 80 year old woman and she sang it and sounded almost exactly like the record I 1st heard all the way back in 1972 at age 4! I got "misty" in my eyes. ...and I'm not even of that era. :redface:
The Rez 09-20-2005 12:00 AM
I am . . .
The Wayward Wind stirred my little "pre-pew-bess-ant" soul. Still does - "post-pre-pew-bess-antly"
Gotta look for that PBS thing.
I figure I've sung that song across the yrs almost as often as dear Ms Page. Loved it each time. And I could do a mean waltz when I was 10.
Maybe the two finest hit-record-type waltzes from the 50s are The Tennessee Waltz and Waltz Across Texas. Patti Page & Ernest Tubb. Oh, my!
I don't think Strauss was still writing then.
. . . and I was born the next of kin . . .
