Re: It's on!! BBC 4 - Lightfoot 1972 show
Well, count me as another one who had trouble with the uTorrent link and the PAL vs. NTSC techno issues, so I just went to the YouTube version and watched both parts earlier. It's late now, but what a wonderful concert video and at least I can say I saw it if it goes away. How great seeing Gord in his prime, so robust and that smooth baritone voice. I only had the pleasure of seeing Red Shea once in person at my first Lightfoot concert in 1971 when Terry Clements was just being introduced into the band. There was such purity and simplicity back then with just 2 guitars and a bass. You really hear the richness of Lightfoot's 12-string and Red's superb lead guitar accompaniment. Hadn't heard Gordon play Farewell to Nova Scotia in decades and what a wonderful rendition! Hopefully, this concert will be somehow available on DVD in the future for us folks here in the States.

interesting reading a variety of recent comments from members... I remember him closing out first sets with Farewell to Nova Scotia as recently as mid-90s

Not sure what the heck this is, but it almost looks like a DVD has been made available? Thought this link might be helpful, for those who perhaps weren't able to get the torrent file copied onto a DVD.

looks like he suggests 'trades' of discs...He can't sell them for fear of prosecution.

Just pulling this back to the top of the threads. I want to hear the concert video (post #52 on page 3) while I'm finishing work on a huge spreadsheet.

BBC In Concert - 1972
Thanks to those generous folks who have made this available!
I am watching the .mp4 version as I type and it all I can say is that the recording is simply phenomenal! I am also downloading the DVD version (thank you again seeders!). I don't know if it is appropo to post information how to obtain these, so for those newbies or "drifters" like myself who have been away please PM me if you would like me to share this information. Thanks! The Drifter (aka Sean Gaynor) |

This sure is one amazing thread.
I have to say that it by far my very favourite on the board and it seems many others as well judging by the number of views it has. It's an interesting feeling and a very joyful one also that sometimes during the day's activities, whether it be out shopping or doing something else the thought will enter my mind that "when I get home I'm going to the computer and bring up that BBC thread." The anticipation factor kicks in and when the concert begins it just keeps getting better each time. I guess a lot of the joy emanates from the early days when I could see it for real right here in town. Lucky boy am I. There's one part I love to watch and it's almost surreal in fact I want to share and that's the part in "Minstrel of the Dawn" when Gord is into the lyric "and if you see a ghost don't be surprised." The way the camera subtly brings in the focus on Red Shea just sends the goosebumps to an all time level of high. It's a magnificent piece of artistic skill and interestingly "Minstrel of the Dawn" word has it was written about Red himself. It's highly unlikely the camera person would have known that. Another interesting part is at the end of the song, when the applause is happening you see Gord taking off the Gibson B45-12 string when in fact MOTD is played on the Martin 6 string. I guess it's just the way the filming was pieced together to make it work best. Just an observation from this lighthead2toe guy who feels very "lightheaded" today. What can I say other that it's a "Lightfoot" day today! Bring on those Massey shows! |
