Yes, he does sound good...
His voice is really nice too.

That is the first time I have ever heard Miguel. Really beautiful song but it's so sad. :(

Thanks for putting them up. :)

Every time I hear mention of Miguel, my mind travels back to the days when Lightfoot would pick up song requests placed at the base of his microphone during intermission. At one performance, when going through them, he uttered "Miguel ?!!!!" in a scoffing and incredulous manner. I don't think he was very fond of that song.

Re: Singing "Gordon Lightfoot" songs !

RM - I think part of the reason he doesn't anymore is it is physically uncomfortable for him. He's got his set list with spares and seldom takes the list off track..but it was great to watch for your piece of paper to be picked up and possibly read out loud..and then sung..
I love Miguel..it's a great story/song..

Re: Singing "Gordon Lightfoot" songs !

I always loved that song as well and Gord did a super job with it on the "Summer Side Of Life" Album. One of my favorites from that LP... :)

Well, the performance I was referring to was in the early 80's. I don't recall where I read it, but I believe he also said the song was "geographically incorrect" (Lightfootspeak). Has anyone here ever heard him perform it in concert ?

Nightingale 06-24-2008 01:55 AM

Re: Singing "Gordon Lightfoot" songs !

Well, he did write the song, right?
I wish he would sing it in concert even if he isn't that fond of it....lol...we all like it.

That's a neat story about people and how they gave him their song requests during a concert.
That would be very cool to have your song mentioned and then played by him.
Shoot, I missed out on so much by not being a long time fan but I guess it's better late than never.

Summer Side Of Life...I sometimes wonder if I will EVER get all of his music bought and listened to....

Summer Side Of Life...I sometimes wonder if I will EVER get all of his music bought and listened to.... Nightingale

Hey Nightingale,

I bought "Summer Side Of Life" when I was still in school. Listening to that Album in those days just simply made me happy to be alive, and I remember thinking Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian just like me. I really think that's when I started being proud to be a Canadian. The music and the words on that LP, his pronounciation of words on certain songs... and that face on the album cover, made me wish I was him... What A Guy !!!

In those days I had all the LP's, so when a new one would come out I would get it right away...

As for you Anne, discovering him this late in life, I suggest if you dont already own it, you should buy "Songbook" 4 CD's with songs from many of his LP's. But "Miguel" is not on there, nor is "Love & Maple Syrup", another great one. :)

Not being very patient I sent Tim an email telling him we were watching his videos and received this in reply:

Hi! And thanks for letting me know about this. I was just sitting here
wondering how many listeners I have. YouTube appears to count every view
even if it's the same viewer listening multiple times so for all I know I
have only 5 very loyal fans! ;-).

I'm glad your forum members are enjoying them. I should get around to

Jesse Joe,
That's such a nice story about "Summer Side Of Life". Thanks for telling me about it.:)

I think music is magical...it's so wonderful when it touches your heart and makes you "happy to be alive". Gordon is amazing...hands down the best songwriter/lyricist that I have ever heard, Canadian or otherwise.

You have many reasons to be proud of your country and your heritage, my friend. Canada is a wonderful country with wonderful people. I sometimes feel a bit envious. I think Canada has a lot of integrity as well as many gifted musicians. :)

Yes, I will look into getting the SongBook collection...sounds like good advice.
I am planning to get every cd though...it's just a matter of when...lol.

That would be nice if Tim would join the forum. He must really love Gordon and he does a great job with his covers of the songs:)

That was nice of you to e-mail him and let him know that we like him. Seemed like he appreciated it.
Thanks for letting us know.

Hi Bill W, you got me thinking of writting to Tim also, and I did. Basically inviting him to join Corfid. And I told him what a good talent he has. Here is what he wrote back... ~Jesse Joe~

Hi Jesse Joe,

thanks for the message, and it's fine with me that you're posting my videos. I can't imagine a group I'd rather have see them more than a bunch of Lightfoot fans like myself.

I actually got an email from someone named Bill yesterday letting me know about the posts. I stopped over at your forum briefly to take a look. I suppose I should join. If I haven't I guess it's because I worry about spending too much time browsing the internet and not getting work done! It's already a challenge keeping YouTube off my mind. ;-)

Still, it seems only right under the circumstances. Perhaps you'll see me there soon.

Thanks for writing Jesse Joe and for listening to and promoting my videos. I will be making many more.

Tim

My second request fulfillment goes out to gibsonmartin, who himself is a great guitar player and interpreter of Gordon Lightfoot. See his videos put on line by rebelmachine. Grant this one's for you. Enjoy!

Hi everyone,

it's me Tim. I'm glad you're enjoying my videos. I've been a fan since I was 8 years old and first heard If You Could Read My Mind - before I knew what it was about. The music and the voice was enough to hook me for life, and he doesn't know it, but GL taught me how to play the guitar.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad to be able to share the music with you. I will be making more for sure. Feel free to make a request if you like, or just wait to see what I've gotten up to next.

best wishes,

Wow, Tim. Your musical quest is almost identical to mine. Except I didn't hear IYCRMM until I was about 14.

I'm curious about your guitar. I'm pretty sure it's a Martin. What model?

Hi Cathy,

I did ask him that same question when I invited him to Corfid, My exact words were is that a Martin your playing ? But he probably forgot and didn't answer the question...

With the sound and the look Im guessing that it is a Martin... :)

Re: Singing "Gordon Lightfoot" songs !

Hi Cathy and Jesse Joe,

Cathy: It's a Martin D-35. I bought it new in 1980. It was how I established my credit history as a teenager. It took me two years to pay for it, and I had to spend about two months of that cleaning restaurant toilets to finish paying if off. It was worth it. I have since bought other guitars of course but nothing as nice. Someday I'll expand my collection to include something with a wider fingerboard. I have out-sized hands I'm afraid.

Jesse Joe: thanks for the welcome. I thought for sure that my idea for the screen name would be taken. There are a couple of similar ones but lucky for me (for once) I was actually able to use my first choice -though I mis-spelled it at first and had to re-register to get it right!

Cathy 06-25-2008 05:47 PM

Re: Singing "Gordon Lightfoot" songs !

I thought it looked and sounded like a Martin. I have two of them... an infamous D-15 (that Terry Clements played a few months before I fell off a float and cracked it up during a parade, but luckily it's fixed), and an OM28V that I paid for when the town of Mars Hill gave me $1260 to repair the D-15. The D-15 is a special guitar. I've been told that it's the best sounding D-15 in exsistence.

You'd probably like the OM28V. It has a wide fingerboard mounted on a vintage style neck. It's great for fingerpicking. I didn't like it at first, but after messing around with the saddle and nut, it's a great guitar.

Wow, that must have been awful to crack up your D-15 like that!

I was looking at the OM line a while back. I haven't had a chance to actually try one. I've tried other fingerstyle guitars like Breedlove and Brouwer (not sure on the spelling of that one), but I can't afford one right now. I keep saying to myself that I'll play out somewhere and earn what I need to feed my guitar habit but I never get around to it. Not enough hours in the day.

I'm also interested in the contemporary instrumental fingerstylists. I used to play a lot of Alex DeGrassi. I may post one of those some time if I can get a good enough sound.

Say I've been to your website but my mac doesn't like the format of the tunes you have linked to it. Do you have any YouTube vid's yourself? I'd like to hear your stuff. You play a lot of the same artists that I do!

Hi RM,

well, I've seen him twice, "but that was so long ago...." Once when I was maybe 13 or 14 and once again when I was 19. (I'm now 46) The first was memorable for how my sister and I ruined the experience by bickering with each other through much of the concert. I feel bad about that to this day. We were stupid teenagers. We get along just fine now. The second time was the one time I summoned the courage to ask the girl of my dreams out on a date. It may seem strange that a 19 year old would be having trouble asking for dates, but I was pathologically shy as young man. She said yes and we had a fine time. But just couldn't believe she really liked me, so that was that. She doesn't know it, but many of the songs I sang on my front porch, "A Minor Ballad," "Go My Way," and many others were sung for her. Sigh....

DawnsMinstrel,

Thanks for the reply. Unruly teenagers...egads ! You definitely got an early start. I have no idea where you reside, but do yourself a favor and try to catch him in concert sometime soon. This make not make sense...... even though the experience is not the same, it is the same, just from a different perspective.

I've really enjoyed your videos. Do you have any material of your own to present ?

About the forum : It can be tricky and always "Beware the Moderator". (That was just a joke, it's a fine group here)

Hi Dawnsminstrel,
Glad you made it over to say hello.
Your videos are great and I have really enjoyed listening to them.
You are very talented and it's hard to believe that you were such a shy teenager...lol
You seem very natural and at ease when you perform.:)

Anyway, welcome to the board and hope you can share your music with us and post often. There are lots of nice people here and quite a few talented musicians as well so you'll always have someone to talk guitars and music with.

Jesse Joe, thanks for finding this talented guy for us to watch. :)

Re: Singing "Gordon Lightfoot" songs !

Nightingale,

Thanks for the kind words. As for being shy. Well, I've never been all that shy about performing music. That was my one outlet. But I was shy with people, especially when they were beautiful young women. I'm almost embarrassed to tell you where I'm living now. I'm in Rochester NY and could easily drive to Toronto, and Massey Hall, "...in about three hours time." ---Sorry about the quotes, I can't help myself they just pop into my head straight out of the songs. I could have gone for his last series of concerts there if I'd had the money. It's a long story, but I've been digging myself out of debt for a while now and I have a hard time spending money.

RM,

I think it was you who asked about original material. I do have an instrumental piece that I wrote a long time ago, and I have a number of melodies for songs for which I haven't written decent lyrics. I have perfectionist tendencies and I've just never been very happy with the kind of lyrics I come up with. But, one of the reasons I decided to post to YouTube was in the hope that some listeners would start to ask for original material. I thought it might get the wheels turning. We'll see.

Hi jj,

wow. It looks like you're having so much fun there. At 4:50- you mean "Ribbon of Darkness?" Yup, very nice. But I like what came before too! Highway Songs is a great song! Thanks for the video and the requests. I'm especially glad you asked for The Gypsy. That's one I wanted to do anyway (I suppose in a way I want to do all of them!), but I like it when there's a request. I haven't gotten round to learning it yet, but I'll get there. If you don't mind, I'll list the gypsy and one others as your "official" requests in my request list on my channel page.

DawnsMinstrel 06-26-2008 10:27 AM

Re: Singing "Gordon Lightfoot" songs !

Oh, I forgot: about zooming in with the camera. I'd actually like to be a bit closer to the computer when I'm playing. Makes it easier to reach the keyboard. But there are two problems. First, it's a built in camera, so I can't really direct it, and second if I move closer, I can get my face in there better, but then the guitar is out of the frame. So I guess the two choices are my face and a little bit of guitar or keeping things as they are. I can experiment to see what works. Maybe I'll try that on my next video. Here's an awkward question: What's more interesting? My face or what my fingers are doing on the guitar? Oh, and whatever I do has to pass muster with my wife too! Too bad I can't do a split screen or something.

I played a very affordable sunburst Gretsch OM a couple of weeks ago. It was in the $300 price range, and was a great sounding, great playing guitar. I think with today's technology, spending thousands on high end guitars is a bit ridiculous, especially when you can buy one that sounds as good for 1/10th the price.

I don't have YouTube, but I have an account with MySpace with a few songs. I don't understand why you can't play clips right off my web site. Maybe they're rm format and you don't have Real Player? You can get a free version at real.com.

I repaired the D-15 myself. Dave Musslewhite, who at the time was working for Martin (restoring old guitars) sent me the instructions and it worked out great.

Yes, that's right. I don't have realplayer. I just haven't had a reason to download it until now, and I didn't know that rm was a realplayer format. Thanks, I'll try to get to that today. In the meantime, jj just sent me a youtube vid of you and a bunch of other people playing together. Great finger picking! It looks like you were all having a great time.
