This has always been a favorite song of mine both by Gordon and Robert Flack. Does anyone know the history why Roberta decided to record this song? Both of their versions are fantastic; both from a women's and a man's heart. Does anyone know if their is any history behind his writing this song?

Yea, Gord didn't write it. Someone named McColl (or something like that) did and Gord just covered it very early.
Roberta? She needed a hit--and got one! Still think it had a lot to do with Gord's LAST Time I Saw Her epic. ------------------ "Is there someone sewing seams through all my hopes..." "Look around this place, There's a smile on every face..." |

The song "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Roberta Flack. Wow...What a classic. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif It's my understanding that Clint Eastwood either heard the song (First Time...) or Roberta sing and wanted her to do something for a movie soundtrack. The result was "First Time..." which was used in the movie "Play Misty For Me" as a love song theme for Clint and Donna Mills.
Did the song predate the movie? I really can't say. Perhaps someone else can help here. It's my understanding, by the way, that clint is a big jazz lover ( i.e. Mingus, Charlie Parker) and is quite a musician himself. If memory serves me I think Clint did a movie about Charlie Parker or one of the jazz greats. Again, anyone know? |

I brought this up again as yesterday was a very sad day for me. After being a mother for 31 years, my son left for his third year of college. My oldest daughter has been married for almost 11 years and my 18 year old graduated from high school in June and moved out in July and is working full time. Being a mother is a wonderful experience, as some of us know, and so I was very sad yesterday. I got out Songbook and Early Lightfoot and asked Gord to sooth my soul. As some of you know if really am fond of the son THE FIRST TIME EVER I SAW HER FACE that was also sang by Roberta Flack in the 60's. I want each of you who has that cd, tape or record to get it out and listen to it. Gord's voice is so true and the arrangement is so simple. Listen to the way he sings each word. Truly from heaven. Thanks Gord for helping me through yesterday and today will be better.

Well.... since I'm sick in bed today with only my laptop & two cats to keep me company
I've had a chance to really look at some of these great topics and replys. "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Roberta Flack has been "our song" for almost 30 years. Now, it's been changed (by hubby!) to "Foolish Love" by the Moody Blues. It's about a lengthy love affair, between husband & wife, that is still as new, innocent and sweet as the day it began. The lyrics, "no danger and no doubt" are especially meaningful as this relationship is a safe santuary to both of us. But TFTEISYF still takes my breath away. midnightmisty |

Thank you, Sundownbuff. Your message is very much appreciated. And I hope you're starting to feel better about "empty nest syndrome". But the kids will be home for the holidays!
Yes, Gord's music has helped me through some mighty rough times. It was soothing, it gave me strength, it made me remember how beautiful life really is and it gave me hope when all hope seemed to be gone. I spoke to Gord about that, once, and he said, (laughingly!) "H**L!!!!!It gives ME hope!" nite all! midnitemisty [This message has been edited by midnightmisty (edited November 09, 2000).] |
