November 10, 1975, 7:10pm. Last communication from the Edmund Fitzgerald: "We're holding our own." The signal is out at Whitefish Point; storm lashing; the Fitzgerald is still 15 miles away from the relative safety of Whitefish Bay.

Yeah, I thought of it too. One year passed for each man who died....

I remeber the storm well. Over a 1/2 inch of freezing rain caked our trees and powerlines until they snapped. Schools and roads closed all day with 50 mph winds.
Thought the roof was going to blow off our house. N |

I knew I'd get beat to mentioning this topic.
I can't believe it's been a year again since the last anniversary. I can't say I knew of the actual wreck when it occoured, since I was just 7 at the time, but was surprised to find out it was an actual event after I did hear the song. I thought it was a very creative thing Gordon had come up with himself. Which it is and as always it will remain a grand tribute to the men on that ship that should not be forgotten. Anymore than we should for get those that fight in a war or serve in the military. Now,not to make light of the subject but I was watching the news early this morning and noticed that actor Russell Johnson (The Professor Roy Hinkley on G's Island, turned 80 today. That means in '75,on his 51st birthday,The Fitzgerald sank! (Hmmm...one man who has something to do with a fictional wreck and a real one!! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/eek.gif Coincidence??? http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif Again,no offense or bad humor intended, just happened to see that! Later http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif ------------------ "A knight of the road, going back to a place where he might get warm." ;) - Borderstone |
TWOTEF is sort of a more evolved, mature, compelling version of the formula GL established with Ballad of Yarmouth Castle. I don't think Yarmouth Castle would have been as popular, though I like it very much and perform it whenever I can. Both were based on actual shipwrecks, although in the case of YC, he anthropomorphized the ship ("'Oh Lord,' she groans, 'I'm burnin,'"; "She's cryin' like a child", etc.). In the Wreck, it was the lake, or perhaps the Great Lakes' legendary November disasters, that took on a personality. It worked better, I think, and listeners responded.
