December is past, and tho I could listen to Song for a Winter's Night for another whole month, I think January deserves its own song.
Although Gord has at least 3 or 4 songs with "cold" in the title, my nominee is a selection not yet available on CD, with the hope that such an omission will be remedied in 2001. My nominee? Farewell to Annabel. The opening track to ODR and an absolutely haunting song. I'd love to hear Gord open a concert with it. "Where did you go when the snows lay on the ground?" Any other nominees? ------------------ "And the laughter came too easy for life to pass me by." - SDYS |

I LOVE 'Farewell to Annabel'but my January
song would be 'Restless'. It's the start of the year, we are all feeling 'restless'and looking ahead. As Gord sings 'In the quietude of winter, you can hear the wild geese cry'. There immediately is that January scene of bleakness and snow as the geese in formation curve high into the sky and are gone - just like the past year. It's just my choice. |
Wow! Great suggestion, SilverHeel. That image is more "early winter" than Annabel, which may be set at the end of winter/ beginning of spring. Maybe we can save the Farewell til later in the year.
Only one other comment about Restless. That has always struck me as a song for one whose traveling days are over ("trade that for a warm bed in a place that I call home") and becomes restless (without regret) when the sight of the geese causes him to remember the travels of the past, symbolized by the schooner, the engine, the diesel. The narrator then returns his thoughts to his current path, the warm home. As such, the narrator has looked back, then forward -- which in Roman mythology would be symbolized by Janus, the god who looks in both directions! And the god who gave us January. I'd place your suggestion ahead of mine at this point. Any others? Or are the nominations closed? ------------------ "And the laughter came too easy for life to pass me by." - SDYS |

How about "10 Degrees & Getting Colder" lol
With the start of the 21st Century upon us, how about the timeless "ENDLESS WIRE"? |

But I still go with 'Restless' for January. Even tho' 'Looking at the Rain' is most appropriate for those of us in the UK right now! |
