The famous Pulitzer Prize-winning flag-raising photo taken by Joe Rosenthal - with Ira Hayes and the other Marines - was actually the second flag-raising (and second photo) that day - February 23 1945. The first was raised a few hours earlier but was deemed too small to be widely seen on the island, so the second, larger flag was raised, and THAT'S the one most people associate with Iwo Jima.

Interesting information about a song I've always liked. Kinky Friedman have also a good version of this song on his 1976 album "Lasso From El Paso". Thank you!
