Better to let your fingers do the walking and google you will find at:- http://www.iwojima.com/raising/raisingc.htm

from the same site:-
"Ira died three months later after a night of drinking. As Ira drank his last bottle of whiskey he was crying and mumbling about his "good buddies." Ira was 32."
so yes the story of Ira is true

As John said YES IT IS. He was a good Marine who died way too young. I play that tune on the way to get my hair cut sometimes. "Once a Marine, always a Marine". But it is a JC song nonetheless.

Yes, the Ballad of Ira Hayes is a true story. However, it was written by Peter LaFarge - a friend of Bob Dylan, Townes van Zandt, etc. who was himself native american white parents (hence the name). See the story of Ira Hayes here: http://thegoldweb.com/voices/irahayes.htm

The famous Pulitzer Prize-winning flag-raising photo taken by Joe Rosenthal - with Ira Hayes and the other Marines - was actually the second flag-raising (and second photo) that day - February 23 1945. The first was raised a few hours earlier but was deemed too small to be widely seen on the island, so the second, larger flag was raised, and THAT'S the one most people associate with Iwo Jima.

Interesting information about a song I've always liked. Kinky Friedman have also a good version of this song on his 1976 album "Lasso From El Paso". Thank you!
