This tidbit came from a website called amIright.com
I thought the perspective was refreshing. Any other contradictory song lyrics from GL come to mind ?

Gordon Lightfoot's, "The House You Live In"

The Nonsensical Lyrics:
Beware of strange faces and dark dingy places
Be careful while bending the law
And the house you live in will never fall down
If you pity the stranger who stands at your door.

Why They're Nonsensical:
So, which is it, Gordon? Do we fear the stranger or pity him?

I think in this case because Gord wrote that song at the request of the girlfriend of a member of the band "April Wine" and he sat down at that particular request and wrote the song in about ten minutes. It probably was written in a state of mindset with the best of intentions of trying to send a caring message to the friend. It's no secret that Gord's friends are friends. Remember this lyric from "Highway Songs" "Every one that I call friend knows they will not be forgot," Hope this helps. Ron Jones

Thank you for the insight Mr.Jones. Your response was very helpful. I guess that I just found the idea to be humorous. If I speculate, I suppose "Strange Faces" could be the others that she/he may meet, and the "Stranger at your gate" would be the protaganist.

Thanks again,
