I was listening to Stone Cold Sober the other night off Songbook. What a great song and (most unfortunately) what a lost opportunity. That song could have been a high charting hit, I can even see it being the theme song to a movie. I guess Gordon was never satisfied with any of the takes. I wish it had worked out but I'm glad we have the outtake from Songbook to listen to. Any thoughts on this song? David

Yes, I love it. What a great song! I'm not sure of the time frame, but by its placement on Songbook, had it been released in the early 70s then airplay could very well have been possible.

A fabulous song of reminiscing and regret.

It's a fabulous song but I know that radio programmers back then would not play a song like that one. They would peg it as being about alcoholics or something dumb like that.

Would have been great though! :)

That song was actually my favorite out of all the new listens in Songbook. Lots of imagery and feelings that hit me just right. yeah. good stuff.

From the Songbook liner notes:

STONE COLD SOBER - Quite personal. There's a feeling of fact about it. It makes me feel good, and a little sad, when I do it. Some losses are more painful than others when it comes to love, and this one is very heartfelt and true. The circumstances of my life at the time matched the song. I think it sounded a little too sad to make it on the record.

The acoustic version of this song is really superb. I have a live copy if anyone would like to have it.

Warning: It'll tear your heart out.

I think (if it were realisticly possible) that all of Gord's songs should be acoustic or at least somewhat "unplugged".

Nothing I like more than simple nice music. Acous. guitar, violin, chello, flute, piano etc. *sigh* :)

Kimberely, I'll go for it and have my heart torn out. I'd love to hear/have that version. I'm salivating as I write this. :)

Is that from the 1974 Massey Disc that is circulating out here in WWW land? I have Stone Cold Sober as well... he launches into it by saying it's a brand new song.. is that the same one? :)

It's from Massey 1974.

I've never heard the Songbook version, but I do have the 1974 Massey version, and it is a tremendous rendition of a great song.

Kimberly,

I'd love a copy. Please send to vindhem@gmail.com if you please.

Borderstone,
I beg to differ ,if I may..Take Terry's Gretch out of the " Wreck",it won't be the same,as with many others.I understand the acoustic solo admiration of which I am a victim, but some of Gord's creations just gotta have Terry,Rick and Mike's input..Just my thoughts
