#1. Waiting For You
#2. A tie between Salute & Harmony #3. Don Quixote #4. GG2 #5. East Of Midnight #6. Cold On The Shoulder #7. Summertime Dream Okay, folks. Sunday Concert vs. Sunday Concert+.......................................... . nah, it'd be no contest on that one. ;) :D (it'd be stupid to pick just the regular sunday concert  ) Okay, for real this time. Dream Street Rose vs. Shadows |
Tough one for me. Love Sea of Tranquility and Dream Street Rose almost enough to carry the whole album....SIGH.

Shadows
I never hit the "skip" button when I play it, but the "repeat" button gets a workout. GL at his best. RMD |
Definitely a toss-up, although I'd take "Salute", in spite of some of the weaker songs, over either of the other two albums of that approximate era.
Let's see... The two title songs: Shadows is an excellent song; as I mentioned at the Northampton, MA concert back in October, it was so beautiful that the audience paused before applauding, trying to take in the impact of the song. Much better than DSR, which I find kind of impersonal and formulaic. Weaker songs on "Shadows": All I'm After (someone recently mentioned the "I Think I've Got it Maaaaaaade" verse, and I agree that it's annoying). Thank You for the Promises and I'll Do Anything are not Gord's best (has he ever played them in concert?). Weaker songs on "DSR": "Hey You"; I think "The Auctioneer" is OK, but some have mentioned disliking it intensely. The sea songs: "Triangle" vs. "Ghosts of Cape Horn"--Triangle is more fun, Ghosts is more profound; toss-up. The best songs: On Shadows, the title song, In My Fashion, Heaven Help the Devil and Blackberry Wine are the ones that I like best; 14K gold is interesting but its message is muddy (if a woman is as valuable as 14K gold, why would you "keep your mind a mystery, run 'em hot and cold? why would you say "gonna pack my chips/I'm leavin' town today?"). I like She's Not the Same, and Baby Step Back, but wouldn't put them in the upper ranks. On DSR, I don't think the songs reach the quality of the best of Shadows, but there are more to like--Sea of Tranquility, Ghosts, On the High Seas, Whisper My Name, If You Need Me, Make Way for the Lady and Mr. Rock of Ages may not be in the top tier of his songs, but they all have good melodies, fine songwriting, and a message. I guess I'd say a tie, except that I probably listen to DSR about 50% more than I do Shadows. So, DSR. DQ |

IT would be for me "Dream Street Rose", but 2 songs on Shadows, will make me pick "SHADOWS."
The songs are {1} Heaven Help The Devil. {2{ Thank You For The Promises. |
Shadows is the mellow one and I really like 14 Gold and In My Fashion, but DSR is just too strong.
|
Easy choice for me,it's "Shadows". On that LP Gordon made wonderful use of the light-rock sound of the day. Songs like the title track,"14 Karat Gold","I'll Do Anything","All I'm After","She's Not The Same" and "In My Fashion".
Also there's the great non-catgory songs like "Baby Step Back","Thank You For The Promises","Heaven Help The devil" & of coure,"Triangle". "Blackberry Wine" as i've said, not the best of songs but it doesn't hamper how much I like the LP. Dream Street Rose has good songs too but just dont resonate "as much" as Shadows' does. (Not by much though.) ;) |
It's a close one, but my vote goes to Shadows.
|
Shadows in a close one.
DQ above stated what I noted. There are more goood songs on DSR , but they are not quite up to the level of the top ones on Shadows. Ultimately 14K Gold sells me. Love the hook/melody. However I think the main lyric of a woman being "14 Karat Gold" is a bit of a back handed compliment as 14K gold is not worth much at all really . :D Cheers to Ms Brink who introduced me to this song (14 K Gold) ,and now one of my absolute favs. of all of Gord's. :) |
Maybe he meant it in a secretive sarcastic way. :D

maybe she was a gold digger...
"...so long, farewell, goodbye, this is the end" |
