Hi Sheryl,
where are you going to put that rock? Perfect item for a Gord fan. :D |
Yes well to reply to the lady from California the day after we had attended the April 2005 Agoura Hills concert with her in and her husband we set off westwards onto the Pacific Coastal Highway,a.k.a. Route 1
http://www.seeamerica.org/byways/ima...oadmap_web.gif we had a room booked at Cambria and if you study the above map you will spot the tiny hamlet of Harmony that we had consulted Sheryl's Gabe about at the concert. We had a delightful wine tasting there during which (as by pure fluke Susan had a copy of the Harmony CD in her purse) we regailed the GL fan who served us with obviously suitable music that he was hitherto unaware of. Of course we were obliged to spend some tourist dollars on samples of their most excellent wines, plus a gift that we gave to Gord in Las Vegas the following week and in line with my own souvenir policy this fridge magnet http://img57.imageshack.us/img57/762/harmony9ze.jpg John Fowles We heartily recommend a stop there for anybody else traversing Route 1 in Middle California For the Northern section of this scenic road there was an article recently in the Daily Telegraph Travel section on:- "Bears and giant redwoods Sarah Shuckburgh travels on the road to Mendocino." see:- http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/ma...ixtrvhome.html |
I've been to most of those Route 1 cities very often, John, as our family (when I was a teen) used to go in our truck/camper up the California/Oregon/Washington coast and stay in campgrounds, and visit interesting sites along the way most summers. (Wow, that was a long sentence, wasn't it, ha?!) Many pleasant memories. I loved the tiny town of Cambria. In fact, I hardly think it even can count as a "town." It was just a restaurant, a souvenir store, and a B & B (bed and breakfast) as I seem to recall -- of course, we're talking... oh...38 years ago. Egads, I'm older than dirt, ha! (to quote a fellow corfidian) I wonder how old the town of Harmony is.

the town is now an urban sprawl a good 2 miles long with many shops, including a quite splendid bakery where we availed ourselves the chance to sample Olallieberry Pie and restaurants plus a loop road (Moonstone Beach Drive) that looks out onto the Pacific Ocean where we stayed at the delightfully named FogCatcher Inn. http://image.pegs.com/images/IL/MOFOG/mofog_b1a.jpg http://www.hotels-hoteles.com/images...fornia0194.jpg our room was all of 100 feet from a track leading down to the beach 2 Harmony Quote:
I remember Gabe joking about the variable population I think I took a similar photo showing a decline to 12 but am blowed if I can find it now trust the internet not only is there wiki at:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harmony,_California But also a nice history at:- http://www.harmonyca.com/history.html Which will inform you that "A creamery operated in this location from 1869 until mid-1955." AND moreover "The post office has operated continuously since 1915." http://www.socalobserver.com/images/...%20inside3.jpg as for the winery "The opportunity for Chuck to work as a consultant winemaker enabled him to start making wines under his own label in 1989, and Harmony Cellars was born. From the beginning, it’s been a joint effort for both Chuck and Kim. Chuck produces the wine, and Kim as the business manager, runs the day-to-day operations. They built the winery in 1993 on coastal property that has been in Kim’s family for four generations." http://www.pasowine.com/wineries/labels/harmony.jpg "Chuck was camping in the area in 1981.Eight years later, Harmony Cellars produced 2,000 cases of its first wines in rented winery space. The tasting room was located in the old Creamery building in the town of Harmony in anticipation of the winery being constructed nearby. The first vintages produced in the new winery were in 1993. As of 1996 production was approximately 4,000 cases" Obviously time you revisited the area while you are still young enough to enjoy it...and visiting the area John Fowles |
