besides BDIJ was there any other songs by Lightfoot that perhaps caused conterversey in 1 way or another either Canadian or Stateside of the border?

No, there were no others.

"Cherokee Bend" comes to mind. It's a pretty topical song to me, though I don't know if any actual controvery was raised about it.

I don't know...the Patriots' Dream?

Joveski (with all the insight that only an Australian could provide), rightly points out that "The Auctioneer" was incredibly conterovershul. It was widely reported that the "Society Expecting Clear Pronunciation and Speech Patterns " went ballistic at the time !

Good grief! It's CONTROVERSY or CONTROVERSIAL!!

$50 is bound to bring controversy

We know "Black Day In July" raised quite a ruckus back in '67 with Detroit and surrouding radio stations refusing to play it.

I can imagine Gord talking to the radio programmers,"What do you mean you wont play a song about a riot?"
"It won't cause another one,I promise!" "Cross my heart!" :D

On another song,"Blackberry Wine" I'm surprised in 1982 parents didn't complain about a song/video about wine being played on Mtv.
(Of course that only would have happened if the LP had been successful. )

Summerside of Life has a slightly controversial air to it in my opinion. "If you saw him now, you'd wonder why he would cry the whole day long"--Lightfoot himself said this song was about boys going off to fight in Vietnam. To me, the above line paints a perfect picture of the despair and despondency of PTSD that vets feel. It's a heartbreaking song and it did come out in 1971 as the Vietnam war still went on.

grasp that our touhy here beleeves in spelling being ruffly fonetikal. So you are both waisting your time and berking up the rong tree organising a witch hunt IMHO

Give it a break folks...

When I've checked in with this forum I have found numerous misspellings and poor use of grammar, my own occasional posts included. He/She obviously is a fan of GL. Leave it at that. I don't know what's worse....being pretentious, or judgmental.

Does anyone but me find 'Spanish Moss' controversial - or is it just naughty?

Borderstone 08-31-2005 04:57 PM

Elizabeth,"Spanish Moss" is what I call,"Poetically Naughty in a clever way!" ;)

Gordon did a very good job of disgusing what he may have been singing about, never heard a peep out of anybody!

"peep." Now cut that out!!

I know in 67 Jannis Ian released Society's Child witch was banned but I read or heard a sttaion in Atlanta GA was fire bombed for playing the song. perhaps they weren't overreacting though if BDIJ wasn't maybe Gord would of gotten noticed sooner I'm sure sometimes when enough attention is created people will wanna buy the single or even the album. maybe The Smothers Brothers should of had him on their show. 1 extra headache for CBS.
