I meant to post this awhile back - Billy Joel does his imitation of Gord singing Alberta Bound. It is a very rousing rendition and the Toronto audience loves it every time he does it.
In the liner notes of Burton Cumming's "Up Close and Alone" live C.D. (1995)he states that he has done his version of Gord doing the Rod Stewart hit - Maggie May - in front of Gord. He does not however say what happened next. I don't know if there is an MP3 of it around. Perhaps someone with that expertise could check it out and get back to us so you could all have a giggle! For those who don't know Burton Cummings - he was in the Guess Who back 34 years ago - at one time they had more hits on the charts and sold more albums than the Beatles. "Stand Tall" Albert Flasher, Laughing, Undun, No Sugar Tonight, These Eyes, are some of their songs and some of Burton's after he went solo. Char |
Charlene,
They also did 'Lightfoot' although it wasn't a hit. Dan |
I'm always surprised that more artists don't take a turn at doing Gordon Lightfoot's music. As long as it's done by an appropriate singer and they don't re-arrange it to pieces,I'd like to hear more try.

I agree with the Britany part!! As far as covering songs, I think that some singers are held in such esteem that other singers don't feel comfortable doing their songs. I certainly don't pretend to be an Elvis expert but I don't remember many of his songs being covered either, except for the ones that were recorded by the original writers (Carl Perkins, Gordon Lightfoot, Kris Kristofferson).

Did Johnny Cash or Jimmy Buffet do a Gordon Lightfoot song? Did Gord do any one of their songs?

There are MP3s of both tunes: "Lightfoot" by the Guess Who and "Gordon Lightfoot sings Maggie May" by Burton Cummings floating around in cyberspace. Try KaZaA and search for them...you'll find 'em.
