What Should I Buy Next?
Okay...You all have probably been asked this more than once but I am wondering what I should listen to next.
I have "Dream Street Rose" and "Gord's Gold" and I love them both. I am thinking of "Shadows"..."Cold on the Shoulder" or "East of Midnight". What's your opinion? Also, should I wait to hear "Harmony" or "Painter Passing Through" or should I give them a listen before I hear all the older stuff... |
Re: What Should I Buy Next?
summer side of life (essential)
don quixote (similar to above) cold on the shoulder (classic mid 70s sound) summertime dream (for his biggest hit) sundown (more big hits) the untited artists collection (all his 60's stuff on 2cd's) salute (to get the rockier side of him) east of midnight (if you want Gord with modern 80s production) a painter passing through (for modern day voice) shadows (quite similar to Dream street rose) If you could read my mind (the development of his 70s sound) old dan's records (underrated gem) endless wire (slightly not as good as the above, but a pre-curser to the more modern sound) take your pick! |
Re: What Should I Buy Next?
The joveski list is Right On !
But may I also suggest his 5 first Lp's which he recorded for United Artist in the late 60's, those are wonderful... {1} Lightfoot {2} The Way I Feel {3} Did She Mention My Name {4} Back Here On Earth (My Personal Favourite, Vocal, Guitars 6 & 12 string & Bass) {5} Sunday Concert (Recorded live at Massey Hall in 1969) |
Re: What Should I Buy Next?
Hi Nightingale,
Ah, a Hoosier... I used to be a big IU fan, before they messed with Bobby... Cold on the Shoulder and Shadows are both great albums. I would also suggest Summertime Dream, If You Could Read My Mind, Sundown, Don Quixote, or Summer Side of Life. I think they are all great. His other albums are great too, but I think I would start with one of those first. Really just a question of where you want to start first, since you will undoubtedly want to hear them all. A big part of the fun is finding your songs - those that you think are great, but unappreciated. I envy you. You have a lot of good listening ahead of you. |
Re: What Should I Buy Next?
nightingale,
what a great list from Joveski. My he must have had that thought out. I cannot advise people on where to start, only that they must start and NOT stop. Are you going to the concert in Merrillville this year? His concerts introduce more thought |
Re: What Should I Buy Next?
I would suggest If You Could Read My Mind or Did She Mention My Name to get used to some of his oldeST stuff.

Re: What Should I Buy Next?
It looks like the older music is a big favorite with all of you.
Joveski, thanks for the list and what I can expect from each cd. I wrote it all down so that I can refer back to it as I buy the music. I think I will get Summer Side of Life for sure and maybe some of the older offerings that were mentioned. Jesse Joe, all those sound good to me. I am going to check out the United Artist Collection and see what's on it...hopefully Back Here On Earth is included in that, but if not, I will move it way up the list. Hey Wings....Lots of people loved IU before they messed with Bobby...lol. I think most Hoosiers miss him even though most won't admit it. I like Purdue...it's closer to home. I agree with you on how great it is to find those special songs that really become your own. I envy me too....lol. It's been a while since I have had that experience of being excited about an artist and discovering all the songs that I grow to love. It's going to take a while but I plan on hearing it all. I am taking your advice Gwen and I will start and not stop till it's done...lol. Yes, I am going to Merrillville for the concert. I am so excited about seeing him live. Are you going to any concerts? ShutUp and Deal, I'm Losin'....I gotta ask, how did you decide on that screen name? I get it....older stuff first. It makes sense to begin at the beginning...lol. Kathy Number Four(love your signature) and RM....lol. Thanks for the advice...I will put it to good use. |
Re: What Should I Buy Next?

Re: What Should I Buy Next?
IMO I'd say that it's generally best to start at the beginning. Do pick up the United Artist Collection (as stated, it included all 4 first albums).
While many of us enjoy Gord's early work, the later works are equally great. My personal favorites right now are Salute, Waiting for You, Painter, and Harmony.... In other words, his more recent work. There is lots to discover (to put it mildly!!!!), so enjoy the journey (it's not a race). |
Re: What Should I Buy Next?
Joveski, Kathy # 4, and Peter Bro 10, dont want to prove you wrong or anything like that, but he did put out 5 Lp's for United Artists. :)
I have {The Original LIGHTFOOT} w/ 3 CD's, includes all 5 United Artists LP's. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...4L._AA240_.jpg ![]() {1} Lightfoot {2} The Way I Feel {3} Did She Mention My Name {4} Back Here On Earth (My Personal Favourite, Vocal, Guitars 6 & 12 string & Bass) {5} Sunday Concert (Recorded live at Massey Hall in 1969) Nightingale, on "Back Here On Earth", the song 'The Gypsy' is one great poem... From Val's website: www.gordonlightfoot.com http://www.gordonlightfoot.com/Lyrics/TheGypsy.txt The Gypsy, ©1968 by Gordon Lightfoot Step inside my tent, said she, I'd like to read you palm Leave your dollar in the jar, this won't take very long Leave the circus noise behind, close your eyes, relax your mind I'll tell you if you should quit now or if you should go on Then I said, now what do ya see She said, deedlee-dum, deedlee-dee Where'll I go, what'll I be She said, deedlee-dum, deedlee-dee She threw some sawdust in the air and her hands began to shake She told me the town where I was born, she almost knew the date She lit a candle with her eyes and then she made the table rise She took the dollar from the jar and then she guessed my weight Then I said, now what do ya see She said, deedlee-dum, deedlee-dee You are so old, you are so wise Deedlee-dum, deedlee-dy Give me a sign, tell it to me She said, deedlee-dum, deedlee-dee Then she spoke most quietly Oh, Deedlee-dum, deedlee-dee When you we a child at school they taught you quite a lot You were told when you should speak and when you should not You were taught to read and write, to take your lessons home at night A little knowledge serves you well but the golden rule does not Then I said, now what do ya mean She said, deedlee-dum, deedlee-dee Where'll I go, what'll I be She said, deedlee-dum, deedlee-dee Then when I came home that night to lie awake in bed I thought of that old gypsy and the words that she had said And now I see with due respect, the more we learn the worse we get So if you feel you've no regrets, go have your fortune read Then I said, now what do ya see She said, deedlee-dum, deedlee-dee Where'll I go, what'll I be She said, deedlee-dum, deedlee-dee You are so old, you are so wise Deedlee-dum, deedlee-dy Give me a sign, tell it to me She said, deedlee-dum, deedlee-dee Where'll I go, what'll I be She said, deedlee-dum, deedlee-dee You are so old, you are so wise Deedlee-dum, deedlee-dy Give me a sign, tell it to me She said, deedlee-dum, deedlee-dee |
Re: What Should I Buy Next?
Myself, if you don't have it allready, I'd get Summertime Dream.

Re: What Should I Buy Next?
Okay, this is driving me crazy...lol
I have written two very long posts in reply to this thread and it won't go through. I am not sure if it's my computer or a problem with the site. When I am done and hit the post quick reply button it says I am not logged in and won't let me. Shoot, and I had some really deep thoughts about the music that I wanted to share...lol. Maybe tomorrow.... Anyway, I just didn't want all of you to think that I was ignoring you. |
Re: What Should I Buy Next?
there might be a word limit on how much you cant post - i'm sure john are char would know!

Re: What Should I Buy Next?
I think it's 10,000 words per post.
Make sure you're logged in before hitting 'Reply"// |
Re: What Should I Buy Next?
Yep, I think it's my computer. It seems to disconnect from the internet if I am idle to long.
That's really annoying...lol. Anyway, I have the United Artist Collection on order from Amazon(thanks for the tip kathy) and I picked up Don Quixote the other day. I love that cd from beginning to end....absolutley stunning! I don't think a song has ever taken me so far away from reality as Christian Island does. It's so lovely and calming. Maybe I feel that way because I love the water...nothing makes me happier or calmer than being near the sea or on a lake. You guys could have warned me that I needed kleenex for Looking at the Rain...lol. What a beautiful song...sigh.. |
Re: What Should I Buy Next?
Jesse Joe, I like the lyrics to Gypsy.
He really is a wonderful poet as well as a singer/songwriter, isn't he... I think Don Quixote is one of the most amazing songs ever written. The lyrics and the melody are so perfect and it strikes a mood for sure. Summertime Dream is coming up next Timetraveler. I am anxious to hear it. Not in a race at all Peter Bro10...I am taking my time because I know I will be sad when I run out of new songs to hear...lol. It is a journey well worth taking time to cherish each discovery. You know what song surprised me? Ordinary Man. It says a lot about his life but in a way that seems very different than many of his other songs about love/relationships. Ode To Big Blue....sad but so very lovely and moving. |

{Nightingale} "He really is a wonderful poet as well as a singer/songwriter, isn't he"... A poet Genius for sure ! "I know I will be sad when I run out of new songs to hear...lol. It is a journey well worth taking time to cherish each discovery". No not really, when you run out of new songs to hear, you start all over again. Ive been doing that since 1969...  "Ordinary Man" is a really good song. My favorite part of this GEM" : "And as I wander to the cities and the towns I get so lonesome knowing you could be around And when the show is over, there's a holiday motel Another empty bottle and another tale to tell" Brilliant... What A Guy ! :) |

Re: What Should I Buy Next?
Indeed you did Sir John...
I guess I didn't read most of that thread because I didn't want to be influenced by it. Looking through it now I realize that I haven't heard most of those crying songs so I think I had better go buy more kleenex...lol. His songs are so personal that I agree with what Char said...some of them make you hurt for him when you listen. Jesse Joe, I couldn't agree more...the man is brilliant! I love it that you have been a fan since 1969. That's true love and devotion to an artist...now I understand how you know so much about his music and lyrics. I have been a Moody Blues fan since the mid 1970s so I know where you are coming from. There is always something new and lovely to discover when you are truly hearing the music and not just listening to it. Ordinary Man is a great song...it just hit me a little differently but I think it's a very truthful song about how his life must have been. It would be hard to have relationships when you are on the road so much and have that lifestyle. I wish he would write a book and tell some of those 'tales'....lol. |
Re: What Should I Buy Next?
Yes indeed Nightingale,
The more you discover his music, the more your going to be amazed. I kind a envy you a bit.{lol} "Whispers Of The North" is another good one, from the 'Salute' album,(CD) :) |

Whispers Of The North, c{1983} by: Gordon Lightfoot Whispers of the north Soon I will go forth To that wild and barren land Where nature takes its course Whispers of the wind Soon I will be there again Bound with a wild and restless drive That pulls me from within And we can ride away We can glide all day And we can fly away Whispers of the north Soon I will return again To those endless afternoons In sunshine and in rain Whispers of my love Days and weeks on end I will share my thoughts of her In prayers that I will send And we can ride away We can glide all day And we can fly away Whispers of the north The river and the shore In the land that tested Eskimos Ten thousand years before Whispers of my heart In the tracks of animals I will leave my footprints there To lie beneath the snow And we can ride away We can glide all day And we can fly away Whispers of the wind I will feel it sting I will see it rise and fall I will hear it sing The sound is like a song to me It takes away the pain The river is the melody And sky is the refrain And we can ride away We can glide all day And we can fly away And we can ride away We can glide all day And we can fly away Whispers of the north Soon I will go forth Whispers of the north Soon I will go forth |
