Smileys

I had occasion to reply to a posting on another similar forum at
http://forum.mininova.org/index.php?showtopic=235041138&st=0&gopid=756856&
and was delighted to find a larger choice of Smiley's than we have here
using a set of images some animated and including several that could be very useful and appropriate for Corfiddlers

Anybody else have any favourites, from either another forum or one of those annoying popup offerings??
If so perhaps the Modem Maderator could communicate with the boss to extend if possible the smiley's available here

Re: Smileys

For future reference this is the URL that will produce the complete list of emoticons on that
mininova forum:-
http://forum.mininova.org/index.php?...editor_id=ed-0
select the one you want then right click on it and select properties
the URL address can then be copied and used here by pasting into the image dialog box
here are two more that I rather like
http://forum.mininova.org/style_emot...ult/blowup.gif

http://forum.mininova.org/style_emot...FlyingPigs.gif
Plus there are hordes of websites offering free emoticons
here is one which seems to be illustrating a Gord toetapper!!

oh dear oh dear oh dear
Basically the procedure is precisely the same as for displaying any other image here, which was made really elementary by Florian's use of the revised bulletin board which has the benefit of the most useful "cheat box" control (editing) panel immediately above the text entry box.

OK Yer Tis
  1. the golden rule is that you can only display images by the image system that are already on a website, not directly from your own computer
  2. So if necessary upload to a storage site
http://www.imageshack.us is free and most importantly your images will not be deleted if nobody uses or sees them and is highly recommended.
An alternative to linking directly to an image on a website especially if you suspect that your chosen image may not be permanently online)is to use the forum's attachment system to show a thumbnail (but that is after your text not a part of it
  3. locate your desired graphic, be it a still picture (jpg format) or a gif (some of which like these emotions are animated)
  4. right click on the graphic
  5. an err umm right click menu popup should err umm popup
  6. select the "properties" on that menu (with Internet Exploder it is the last item)
  7. click it
  8. examine the properties popup for "location" (Firefox) "address/URL" (IE) or whatever
  9. highlight that URL
  10. copy it (to your clipboard)
  11. Look carefully at the control panel above the txt insertion/composing area and you might see the handy image display icon (third from the right under the anti-clockwise rotation gubbins arrow
    it looks remarkably like this:-http://www.corfid.com/vbb/images_cor...nsertimage.gif
  12. An image address box will popup with "http://" already inserted and highlit
  1. press delete to get tid of the "http://" and present a clear space to paste into
  2. with your cursor in that address box press the CTRL and V keys together
  3. that should paste the graphic's URL into the address box all ready to place in the new forum message
  4. press OK
  5. the graphic should now appear inside the composition text box
  6. marvel at how clever you are and submit the message or reply
in an earlier reply poung man you also had the temerity/cheek to state

which gives me the opportunity of a soapbox declaration
My reason for that gruesome choice was simply that I was mindful of the "pogrom" by Les Quebecois in the 1960's to keep their ancient version of French unsullied by Angloisms and grammatical errors I was afraid that I had offended the Moncton agent of the French Language Police.hat pogrom??
Well in Montreal were such absurdities as this seen at Dorval Airport
"Hilton Hotel L'Aeroport Interntionale de Montreal International Airport"
where obviously the powers that be considered that the locals were too thick to do that simple translation themselves or had insufficent imagination to let them make a wild guess!!
This is the reason why all across Canada "STOP" signs are bilingual
http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thum...sign-arret.jpg
I believe this is to keep the Quebecois happy and so avoid separation
I did find this Canadian alternative stop sign however
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._stop_sign.jpg
Stop sign at Kahnawake, Canada in English and Mohawk language.
And here is another Canadian Indian stop sign this time in La Belle Province
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFO...uebec_cree.jpg
During our August visit to France I was able to confirm that the original French are rather more capable as all their stop signs are un tres simple monolingual "stop" .
Likewise I was astounded whilst on a skiing trip to Bulgaria in the late 1980's to find that, even though their (Cyrillic) alphabet is entirely different and most confusing since similar letters to Roman are different thus an "s" in Cyrillic is actually "c" and to a vulgar Bulgar stop is СТОП yet their Stop signs also purely say "Stop'!!
I have not however yet searched for any statistics to show whether this causes more vehicle accidents in France and Bulgaria because drivers are preoccupied translating!!
Finally
I have for a long time been fascinated by the subject of animated gifs
and here is one of the best I have seen a true minivideo in only 228.350 bytes
http://bestanimations.com/Military/P...et-03-june.gif
I had previously thought that that was a crash by a Russian aircraft at
RAF Fairford but no here is an actual video of that spectacular incident
My guess is that the gif creator selected suitable frames from the original full black and white video and used an animated gif creation program to create his minivideo
I would love to try to make one of Gord's head shake to surpass the famous wink

Well, here it goes... (I'll do the full "quote" just because I can... pardon the redundancy!)
drum roll please.....

well, I got it to take as an "image Upload" but I'm lost at step 11 there John! I'm not seeing the control panel as you described.

Here, let me try this again

http://forum.mininova.org/style_emot...hit%20Flag.gif

Nope, it's not happening!!! dang.

I get the hyper-link, but not the much-desired direct placement of the gif.

Re: Smileys

Peter Bro10,

It looks like you're using the hyperlink option, rather than the "insert image" option. Place your cursor over the different control panel options, and then read the description that shows up.

There are 2 versions of the control panel :

1) Quick reply

or by scrolling below the text box,

2) Go Advanced (more options and the chance to preview your post)

I always use the Go Advanced so I can check for inanity before I post.
