Celebrating the music of Gordon Lightfoot

char, thanks for giving a Main discussion board heads up to the rescue dog benefit last month, but i think i'll put this short collage from John's performance in this forum, appropriately

natural stage presence and smooth vocals aside, he (as well as Paul) is also quite a fine lead guitar player ... we'll be supporting more good causes in 2012

This is a fine montage, with some talented musicians. Thanks for putting this together JJ.

Gord's music...finely played, and a dog adoption benefit. Two of my favorite things.

plus they served beer! does that make it a hat trick?

those are very kind comments, Brian, coming from one so talented... appreciated

we were able to convert one to colour (same process they used for It's a Wonderful Life, really!:) )

This was a most enjoyable evening and hearing John's vocals, especially EMR really was icing on the cake.
Also I understand they didn't get in much rehearsal time but hearing the wonderful renditions of Gord's songs confirms the dedication level these fine artists really have in putting on a professional performance.

Clearly it was a most successful event and yes, the beer flowed well with the music.

RJ.

Regret I was unable to make this performance, looks like it was a wonderful time. The group is getting tighter all the time.

Re: Celebrating the music of Gordon Lightfoot

very kind feedback, gents...the boys will be pleased

and all the more appreciated seeing as it's coming from some fine musicians

just a little mic hanging from the ceiling leading to a camera sitting on a stool

we think there might be audiences out there who like to hear guys having some good fun

how to narrow a list of 250 down to a representative 30 for one night?

i suppose Gord was similarly perplexed during the 'weeding out' of Songbook

hope to hone in on playing a good chunk of material that Gord no longer does

+ stay true to playing in his variety of strangled (capo-ed) key signatures...

discussions can be perplexing when bass and keys are referencing the actual chords, while simultaneously, the guitarists are referencing capo-ed chords...even more conversation boggling when the capo is on an odd numbered fret

True ... it was while doing my humble recordings that I realized how sophisticated Lightfoot's music really is. Especially the vocals. I thought it would be relatively easy to mimic his vocal style, but not so. And the guitar arrangements are another thing ...

Is this you and band who will be at Hugh's room? If so, we're in for a treat!

p.s. I appreciate your comment on the sophistication of GL's music. For my own enjoyment, spent last night trying to arrange Beautiful for autoharp. Might not happen.

...and you have a beautiful voice, I so enjoyed your music.

The group of performers at Hugh's are different folks...They are all professional artists with careers of their own.
These guys are the internet fans who are the talented few of us that can sing and play and entertain us during the week the Massey concerts are on. They also have their own gigs through the year. And they are superb artists and people!

Char, what a genuinely nice thing to say (even if it was likely fueled by the eggnog:))

we actually play a tribute (well probably 20 Gord tunes and 20 non-Gord) the weekend of the Hugh's event. Have fun, Lindaf

Thank you, Linda! Appreciate that. And I agree, Lightfoot fans are some of the nicest folk around.
