I read that Gordon was determined to get all the details right for The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald after reading a news article where the name was misspelled.

Check out this link: http://home.europa.com/~random7/fitz.htm#line, which states that the Fitzgerald was "downbound" to unload its cargo in Detroit and then continue on to Cleveland to dock for the winter months.
