I love The Band, as well as "The Last Waltz." I own a copy and have watched it several times. Neil Diamond does kind of stick out as not quite belonging with the rest of the artists. The reason he took part was because, I presume, he was friends with Robbie Robertson, who had produced one of Diamond's mid-'70s albums. Robertson actually co-wrote "Dry Your Eyes," the song Neil played.
I remember perusing through one of Roger Ebert's movie guides a few years back and coming across his review of "The Last Waltz." One thing I remember from that review is that he, too, was wondering what on earth Neil Diamond was doing on stage with those guys. I like Neil Diamond--he's a good songwriter--but it would have been a lot better if Gord had played instead.
