Agreed, and well stated.
What I think the author is trying to do, albeit very long-windedly, is make a distinction or comparison between different types of love, which are expressed by the Greek words agape, philia, and eros.
Agape is unconditional or sacrificial love, as opposed to philia, which is affection, and eros, which is romantic love/sexual desire.
Still, I kind of wish he had left Gordon out of it.
