I might be making an assumption here, but when you equate the space shuttle to shock, disbelief and sadness in TMCITR, are you referring to the Challenger tragedy? Because if that is the case, that happened long after Gord wrote the song, so he wasn't referring to that specifically. Maybe just the idea that the shuttle goes out into the dark "nothingness" of space? Who knows exactly what Gord had in mind when he wrote that interesting lyric? I have been told that he sometimes just threw words together that sounded cool. But it definitely keeps us thinking and listening, doesn't it?
